Coal, Coke, and Solid fuels

Specialized testing services for coal, coke, and other solid fuels used in industrial, power generation, and metallurgical applications.

Coal

Coal is the world’s second largest fuel source and the most common fossil fuel for power generation. Because coal varies by rank, both proximate and ultimate analyses are essential for classification.

Proximate Analysis (ASTM D3172) includes:

  • Volatile Matter

  • Fixed Carbon

  • Ash Content

These parameters define coal rank, combustion performance, and handling/disposal concerns from ash.

Ultimate Analysis (ASTM D3176) includes:

  • Carbon

  • Hydrogen

  • Nitrogen

  • Sulfur

  • Oxygen

  • Ash

This analysis determines combustion efficiency, heat release, air requirements, and emissions. High sulfur levels can increase SOâ‚‚ emissions and corrosion, while trace metals may hinder combustion by affecting catalysts.
