Electrical Insulating Oils, ASTM D 3487
This specification relates to hydrocarbon based mineral insulating oils that are used in new and existing apparatus for power distribution such as transformers, circuit breakers, and switching gear. It provided for normal flammability. For less flammable, high fire-point mineral insulating oils, see ASTM Specification D 5222
ASTM D 3487 covers two types of oil which differ primarily in their level of oxidation resistance. Type I Mineral Oil provides normal oxidation resistance. Type II Mineral Oil is for apparatus that requires greater oxidation resistance that is usually achieved with a suitable oxidation inhibitor.
New electrical insulating oils must be free of PCBs. Electrical apparatus that has been drained, flushed, and replaced with PCB-free mineral oil can be tested once for verification and then certified so that future testing for PCBs can be discontinued.
Qualification tests for these ASTM D 3487 mineral insulating oils are in three groups:
A suggested test package for In-Service fluids is also provided. It contains a selected group of tests from the Qulaification Package along with some optional tests that are useful for detecting contaminants such as water, particulates, and trace metals.
We will also be happy to quote a testing package to your specifications.![]()
